The Research Lodge of the Taranaki Province No. 323

The Research Lodge of the Taranaki Province first came into being on Thursday 10th October 1946 at the Liardet Street Masonic Temple. The ceremony was conducted by M.W. Bro Ethelbert C. Smith, Grand Master who placed in the chair V. W. A.M. Niblock P G Lec.  V.W. Bro Niblock expressed his determination to visit every Lodge in the Taranaki Province at least once during his first year in office, no mean feat given the road conditions and vehicles of those days.  The brethren persuaded him to accept a second year in office, setting the tradition of the Master of Research serving two years.

Since those times the Lodge has established a proud history in Masonic tradition, producing many illustrious papers and workings by astute and erudite brethren.  It has a history of assisting brethren in their elevation to higher office in the Masonic tradition, and and provided them with the experience that they need to fill those offices with success and honour.

We note a decline in our membership of late, along with almost every community service organisation, but as always there is a firm core of enthusiasts who maintain our activities.  Recent accomplishments include our joining with the Australian and New Zealand Masonic Research Council of which we are now a full affiliated member, and the establishment of this website for improved communication within our Lodge and with the world of Masonry in general.

The first twenty-five years of our Lodge history has been covered by W. Bro. A. R. Carley P G Swd B. in his publication "Twenty-five Years On"  presented to the Lodge on 18th May 1971.  I look forward to the day when an experienced Brother takes up the pen once more and completes our history to date.
